<h1><span style="color: #ff0000;">Safety In The Gym &#8211; Are You Putting Your Athletes At Risk?</span></h1>
<p>Are you setting yourself up for disaster by not taking the following safety precautions when training athletes in the gym?</p>
<p>The weight room in a gym can be a very dangerous place for those more novice athletes entering the weight room for the first time. Often the ego will prevent the young athlete from asking for help and this is not the place you want to learn from experience.</p>
<p>It is up to the coach, trainer or gym staff to promote gym safety and teach athletes how to properly use the equipment.<span id="more-18"></span></p>
<p>The best thing to do is to book a one hour session with the gym staff and all of your athletes in the gym and have them go over all of the safety issues, common mistakes and how every piece of equipment is used. It will benefit the gym staff and make their job easier in the future.</p>
<p>Rules of the gym should be posted at the entrance of the gym and should be clear for all to read. A photo copy of the rules should be placed in the membership packet for people to read on their own.</p>
<h2>General Rules Include:</h2>
<ul>
<li>Replace weights after use;</li>
<li>Use a spotter;</li>
<li>No food in the gym;</li>
<li>No chewing gum;</li>
<li>Must wear proper shoes, no sandals allowed!</li>
<li>Bring a towel to wipe down your own sweat;</li>
<li>No &#8220;horse play&#8221;;</li>
<li>Drinks must be in a plastic bottle, no cups.;</li>
<li>Wear proper attire-no jeans as they can tear the vinyl on the benches.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Floor Design:</h2>
<p>Designing the outlay of the gym floor requires a lot of knowledge, experience and foresight. There are companies who have consultants that assist and advise new gyms when it comes to what equipment and where to place it in the gym. Restricting factors such as space and financial capital will also affect the way your gym is set-up. The floor space is extremely important as the floor will take a beating when the weights are thrown on the floor. There are several shock-absorbing rubberised materials on the market today.</p>
<p>Free weights will be located in a separate area to the universal machines. This area should contain the bench presses.</p>
<p>Another key point is to have the machines together with regards to the muscle/body parts worked. People will often do leg extensions followed by leg curls or calf raises so group these machines together.</p>
<h2>Technique:</h2>
<p>All athletes should complete a short course on lifting technique. A 30-60 minute session early on will prevent a lot of injuries and problems in the future. I have seen many mishaps in gyms, of which, nearly all were preventable.</p>
<p>One such occasion was when I was a teenager and working out in the gym with a friend and his brother. My friend was using the leg press machine and was pushing out the last few reps when he took his legs off the platform prior to turning in the safety handles to prevent the press from coming down on the athlete.</p>
<p>Well, the machine and a lot of weight came down pinning his legs. With neither of us there to spot him during that particular exercise he was trapped. Luckily we were able to push the press back up and there was no damage to his legs. My friend went on to be ranked number one in the world for tennis and he had a great career, however, this may not have happened due to this weight room mishap.</p>
<p>Another common mistake is when athletes are loading and unloading the bar on the bench press. Some unload one side of the bar not realising that the bar will flip up if it becomes unbalanced due to excessive weight on one side.</p>
<p>The key is to have the athletes perform several exercises with only the bar and no weight. Then once good technique has been established, move on to adding some lighter weights. Having the correct technique is of the utmost importance.</p>
<p>I recommend demonstrating and having the athlete perform the following exercises. These are often the most common exercises performed as well as where a lot of the injuries occur.</p>
<ul>
<li>Bench press;</li>
<li>Squat;</li>
<li>Dumbbell flyes;</li>
<li>Leg press;</li>
<li>Military shoulder press.</li>
</ul>
<p>These exercises can also teach the athlete how to spot. The more advanced power lifting exercises can be taught at a later date but require the most supervision and training (e.g. power cleans).</p>
<h2>Shoes:</h2>
<p>Shoes need to have good traction so as you don&#8217;t slip. They need to be comfortable with laces tied up. They also need to support the foot and prevent lateral movement of the foot in the shoe.</p>
<h2>Gloves:</h2>
<p>Are recommended to prevent blisters and skin damage. They are also beneficial for keeping the hands dry and allowing for a better grip of the bars. They also provide extra support.</p>
<h2>Clothing:</h2>
<ul>
<li>Non-restrictive;</li>
<li>No jewelery;</li>
<li>Clanging items;</li>
<li>No belts or jeans;</li>
<li>Tie shoe laces;</li>
<li>No sandals or open-toed shoes;</li>
<li>No scarves as they get caught in the machines.</li>
</ul>
<p>Remove pens from pockets, phones and other small items</p>
<h2>Safety Tips:</h2>
<ul>
<li>Use mirrors to assist with technique;</li>
<li>The gym should provide for proper ventilation and air conditioning;</li>
<li>Must have access to water;</li>
<li>Provide small towels;</li>
<li>Check machine cables weekly to prevent un-expected breaks;</li>
<li>Conduct weekly maintenance checks of all equipment;</li>
<li>Keep floor mats clean;</li>
<li>No overhead hanging signs;</li>
<li>Cover all power outlets;</li>
<li>Have a safe distance between equipment;</li>
<li>Always have gym staff on duty;</li>
<li>Good lighting in all areas of the gym;</li>
<li>Lookout for water on the floor around the water fountain.</li>
</ul>
<p>This list could go on indefinitely. As mentioned earlier, the gym is not the place you want to learn from experience. So foresee potential problems and devote a good hour to walking around the gym and looking for these potential problems before they occur.</p>
<p>Some of the dangerous things that I have seen over the years include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Athletes tripping over the machine cords that were not properly covered;</li>
<li>Improper unloading of plates on bars for the bench press causing the bar to tip over;</li>
<li>Athletes slipping on the wet floor near the water fountain;</li>
<li>Nuts on the dumbbell not being tight enough and the plates sliding off landing on the lifter;</li>
<li>Athletes not using a spotter on the bench press and squat exercises;</li>
<li>Athletes falling off the back of the treadmill;</li>
<li>Cables snapping during a lift causing injury;</li>
<li>Improper technique;</li>
<li>Spotters not paying attention or being distracted;</li>
<li>Dropping of weights on feet.</li>
</ul>
<p>Any one of these mishaps could bring about serious injury and end an athlete&#8217;s career. Some have made these mistakes and have become world famous athletes, some have suffered career ending injuries. Don&#8217;t be a casualty!</p>

<p>A fitness program is something everyone should have regardless of their age. While everyone has a different fitness level, for the most part everyone should be able to do some type of fitness program. It is always a good idea to check with your doctor before embarking on a new fitness program. There are many great fitness programs out there to choose from. You can also design your own or have a personal trainer help you design one.<span id="more-19"></span></p>
<p>The fitness program that is right for you depends on many factors. You will need to take your current fitness level into consideration. The goal needs to be to implement a fitness program that is going to challenge you but that would not lead to any health issues. It is important to evaluate any current health issues you have before developing a fitness program. For example someone with a bad back shouldn&#8217;t lift weights but it would be fine to jog or walk. A person with bad knees may not be able to run but they may be able to walk on flat terrain.</p>
<p>No matter what fitness program you decide to use, it is going to fail if you aren&#8217;t prepared to work hard and dedicate your time to it. This means putting your heart into following through. Yes, we are all busy but your health is vital to allowing you the ability to do any thing right? Schedule time for your fitness program and then refuse to give up that time. If it means you have to get up earlier or skip some TV time then do it. It may mean your email doesn&#8217;t get checked every day or your dishes aren&#8217;t put away but those things can accumulate without too much problem. Your health is not something you want to push aside.</p>
<p>You are going to have to decide on a fitness program that will help you achieve the fitness goals you have set but also involves exercises and activities that you enjoy doing. Would you rather have a fitness program you have to force yourself to do or one that you look forward to doing? Don&#8217;t have unrealistic goals for your fitness program or you will be disappointed and frustrated with yourself. Focus on what you are able to achieve rather than what you didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>For the best results design a fitness program with the help of a personal trainer or a doctor. Make sure it focuses on your goals and your abilities. Don&#8217;t compare your fitness program with that of anyone else. You are not in a competition but on a quest to succeed at implementing a fitness program that will make you feel and look your best. If you do that, then give yourself some credit as you are doing much better than the majority of the population. If you want to reduce your chances of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, have more energy and boost your metabolism then you need to work on implementing a quality fitness program.</p>

<p>Group health insurance plans can be a blessing to many individuals and families. They provide essential insurance coverage and depending on the employer, cost little or nothing to the employee. However, some blessings can be a burden in disguise. Many individuals and families can actually be much better off by getting an individual health insurance plan. There are countless reasons for this. However, we will dive into the top 5 reasons here:<span id="more-20"></span></p>
<h2>1. Individual Health Insurance Plans Can Be Less Expensive</h2>
<p>Depending on the plan and how much of your money goes into paying for the plan there is a good chance you would pay far less for an individual policy for either the entire family or just your spouse and children. You can look at your pay stubs to see how much you pay each paycheck for your group health insurance plan. Then, simply comparing this to individual/family quotes can be extremely fast and simple. There are countless websites on the Internet that provide free quotes from multiple carriers. So why are group plans more expensive? Here are a couple of reasons among many:</p>
<p>- Group plans accept all employees, which increases the risk for the insurance company and in turn, increases premiums for the entire group. This also makes group plans very risky for individuals in the company. For example, if Karen in the finance department got a life threatening condition, this would affect everyone in the company with dramatically increased premiums and dramatically decreased corporate profits. Maybe, this is already happening now and you don&#8217;t know it.</p>
<p>- Group plan groups are usually much smaller than the actual &#8220;group&#8221; participating in individual policies. <p>A couple of weeks ago I heard once again the same old argument, “If weight loss programs would really work, then we would all look great but we don’t look all that great, so it means weight loss cures are a total waste of time and money!”</p>
<p>You’ve probably heard or thought something similar at some point in your life, if you’ve ever tried any kind of weight loss program.</p>
<p>I believe that <strong>quick weight loss</strong> cures don’t work because people too often fall pray to less-than-honest advertising campaigns, spend money on “miracle products” and get no results whatsoever.<span id="more-21"></span></p>
<h2>So what would really work?</h2>
<p>Is there such a thing as a miracle <strong>quick weight loss</strong> cure or miracle pill? The short and long answer is, of course, “No!”</p>
<p>Weight loss cures and programs would be benefited if the accent would be shifted not so much on losing weight as on improving the general health of the individual. Furthermore, many specialists report that a change in general lifestyle can not be accomplished effectively unless it involves the whole family of the individual in facing weight issues.</p>
<h2>What can one do to improve his or her health, well being and self image?</h2>
<p>Procrastination is the number one challenge you will have to face if you want to make durable changes in your life. I mean what can happen if you don’t take your 30-minute walk today? Nothing, really.</p>
<p>There’ll be times that you skip your walk more and more often and then your gym classes because it will be harder for you to do a full body workout when you’ve done no exercise at all during the week. By the way, 2 hours once a week is not that effective anyway.</p>
<p>And then there are all the small treats you just can’t say no to and does it really make such a great difference if you eat a little chocolate today or a double cheeseburger tomorrow?</p>
<p>When I needed to find a weight loss cure that really works I tried a lot of things. I’m not saying that they are all a waste of time but I didn’t like any of them. There are friends of mine who swear by Atkins or Hoodia or who knows what else but I’ve never had any success with any of the well known weight loss programs.</p>
<p>And I am not the type that goes to the gym either. I simply hate to sweat at the gym. I d all of the chores that need to be done around the house, I love gardening and I spend a lot of time playing with my dogs but I just can not make myself get up and go to the gym.</p>
<p>Plus I love to cook and I love to eat.</p>
<h2>Sounds hopeless, isn’t it?</h2>
<p>Well, it would be hopeless if I were into <strong>quick weight loss</strong> but I am not.</p>
<p>I’ve set myself a simple goal: I have to lose half a kilogram per month. It would have taken me 3 years to reach a healthy weight. It sounds like an eternity and it may well be so for people who expect miracles.</p>
<p>But look at it from my perspective – I don&#8217;t have to make major adjustments in my lifestyle right from day one. All I have to do is eat a little less fries than usual and some more veggies and then over time I have started to drink less sweet carbonated drinks.</p>
<p>It took me more than a year to give up fries and cola but I’ve done it and I was so proud of myself when I did. I still don’t go to the gym but I do walk for 30 minutes four times a week and I do try not to use the elevator at work.</p>
<p>And so, with minor adjustments over a long period of time I’ve come to achieve my goal and I haven’t gained any weight back!</p>
